New Year Ready

New Year Ready by lovelatorri on

As we all know the holiday season is officially coming to a close and we are on the verge of a new year. 2013 seems as though it went by in double time, but it was fun while it lasted nonetheless. For me this year was full of a lot of great memories, new beginnings, and a few goodbyes and I look forward to embarking on bigger and better things for 2014. In welcoming the New Year, most people will be preparing to head out to celebrate in one way or another so I've decided to put together a few looks appropriate for many different occasions. I hope that you can glean some inspiration from the ensembles that I put together and that you have a safe and happy new year!

Double Denim

Fashion Facts:: Blouse: Old Navy :: Skirt: Ross :: Shoes: Forever21 :: Fur Collar: Ebay  :: Nakuru Tribe

One of my life goals is to travel to at least 5 different countries before my 30th birthday. I've made some progress but, I still have four more places to see before I can scratch that dream off of my to do list. One of the top destinations on my list is Africa. I would love to spend at least a year there with my people just learning the languages, all of the different cultures, and of course studying the fashion! While my time to visit has yet to come, one of my aunts just recently returned from a mission trip to Kenya and lucky for me, the gift giving came a little early this year.  The colorful clutch featured in this look was created by the hands of the the Nakuru people (my aunt is convinced we're descendents of this tribe).  Its was crafted from recycled plastic packaging and I could actually decipher some of what the materials use to be. I decided to pair the clutch with a denim on denim look. I added the red heels and faux fur collar to glam up the otherwise simple outfit. Its been unseasonably warm (I believe this is a sign of the times, y'all better stay woke Luke 212:25, Mathew 16:2 , Romans 13:11) so I really didn't need a jacket but I ended up layering with a light trench coat just to be on the safe side.

Cranberry & Prints

Fashion Facts:: Blazer: Macy's :: Blouse: Old Navy :: Skirt: Forever21 :: Tights: Jessica Simpson :: Socks: Steve Madden :: Shoes: Steve Madden

This is a fun yet simple look that I recently wore to a Christmas party. I paired this printed chambray button down with this great cranberry colored skirt that I got from Forever21 on Cyber Monday. This contrasting sleeved blazer that I found in Macy's a few years ago was added for a little interest and warmth.  I wore these great leather booties, despite the fact that I was told they make me look like one of the Sanderson sisters (Hocus Pocus reference), and decided to pair them with patterned tights and socks. What are some of your favorite looks for holiday parties?

Wintry Mix

Fashion Facts:: Dress: Ross :: Cape: Papaya :: Shoes: Lulu's

The sweater dress is a wardrobe staple for most women during the fall and winter seasons because not only are they stylish, they're very practical. You can find great sweater dresses that flatter every body type in just about any color and style and by throwing on a pair of tights and boots your ready for your day. I found this cream sweater dress awhile ago while raiding the racks at Ross. As much as I despise trying on things while I'm shopping, I know that knits can either be your best friend or worst enemy depending on the cut and fabric, so I tried it and luckily it worked. I decided to pair the dress with these fun spiked shoes that my sister got me for my 21st birthday along with an animal print belt just to add some interest and color. I layered with this great camel colored cape that I found last year around this time while I was out Christmas shopping. While it seems as though that was just yesterday, the holiday season has in fact descended upon us once again and I must say that I'm both grateful and excited to see another holiday season. All of the shortbread cookies, family gatherings, and Temptations singing Silent Night, what is there not to love? In all of the commotion surrounding decorations, gifts (my wishlist is here by the way if your feeling generous), and whether or not Santa can continue to be white like Jesus because "that's just the way it is" (read that story here on its very easy to get forget what the true meaning of the Christmas season is all about. While we may never know the exact date that Christ was born, I think its incredible that people around the world stop to celebrate on the day that has been set aside to acknowledge the birth of Christ. So while your spending quality time with your family around the tree or watching those predictable Christmas movies on Lifetime that I just can't seem to get enough of, make sure you keep in mind that a child was born into the world whose soul purpose (pun intended) was to be made sin to cover the wrong doings of humanity so that we could have a way back to God (2 Corinthians 5:21). If you really think about it, what greater gift could you ever receive than a perfect man's life in exchange for your sin? So remember, even if you don't have whatever it is that your hoping for under the tree on Christmas morning, a perfect man gave his life for you to have freedom from sin...what more could you ask for?

Holiday Houndstooth

Fashion Facts:: Blouse: Francesca's :: Skirt: Forever21 :: Tights: Jessica Simpson :: Shoes: Penny Love Kenny

The holiday season is now in full swing with Christmas being just two weeks away. This is a great look that would be perfect for a casual office party. I found this cute blouse at a little boutique named Francesca's and I decided that to pair it with this green skirt that I purchased on Cyber Monday for a phenomenal price. I added simple black pumps and this beautiful black and white shell clutch that I brought back with me from the D.R. I love wearing black and white and adding just a pop of another color for a bit of fun and interest. Adding a black pea coat for warmth would complete this ensemble and you would be all ready to enjoy the share in the holiday spirit with your coworkers!

Leather Lover

Fashion Facts:: Top: BCF :: Skirt: Ann Klein :: Purse: Thrifted :: Shoes: Guess

This just maybe one of my favorite looks. I love that this is such a classic look but the different textures give it a great modern edge. I found this amazing faux leather shirt at Burlington Coat Factory of all places (no shade) after an unsuccessful trip to the mall. This was the only one that I saw and it just happened to be in my size so I couldn't pass it up. I decided to pair it with this skirt that's been hanging in my closet for the last few month because I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to style it. The metallic heels finish the look perfectly and is a great contrast to the hints of gold thread that's weaved throughout the tweed skirt. I think that this look would be perfect for the office because its classic without being old or stuffy.

Electric Blue

Fashion Facts: Top:: Ross :: Belt: Forever21 :: Skirt: Boohoo :: Shoes: Guess

Lately it seems that every time I go to put together a look it ends up being all black. While wearing black always to throw together, I decided it was time to infuse some color back into my life and I thought that this bright electric blue printed skirt and top would be just the thing to do it. I found this skirt while browsing one of my favorite online stores and I loved that the animal print wasn't the traditional black and brown.  The vibrant colors makes this skirt a great traditional piece that could be worn during any season. I love that this is a true pencil skirt in the sense that the hem hits just below the knee, creating a somewhat retro vibe.

While perusing the timeline of a social site I saw the news that Nelson Mandela passed away at 95 years old. Mandela was most commonly known for being an anti-apartheid revolutionary and South African president during the mid to late 90s who spent 27 years in prison fighting for equality. Mandela was an iconic civil rights activist and his life and legacy will continuously inspire future revolutionists. I feel as though his passing emphasizes the great need social and civil leaders of today especially in the black community. I know that there are always the hardworking "everyday"people that work tirelessly for change in their neighborhoods but, with social media connecting people around the globe in tremendous ways, you would think that these tools would be utilized to elicit change on ever present issues like racism, human trafficking, and religious discrimination just to name a few. It seems to me as though there is a direct correlation between the time in which social technology such as cell phones and computers being introduced to the masses and the time in which social activism on a grand scale declined. Instead of our smart phones and tablets being used as a bullhorn to spread the message of whatever cause you believe in, they act more as distractions from the real issues in life. Its so strange that humans have managed to make a telephone, camera, computer, and game console fit into the palm of your hand effortlessly but can't seem to wrap their minds around the notion that you should love everybody despite whatever faults you think that they have. Daniel 12:4 says that knowledge would increase, so I'm guessing its just a sign of the times, but its a shame that all of this knowledge isn't being utilized for a greater good of humanity.

" No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or           his religion. People learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally             to the human heart than its opposite."

Sweater Season's Greetings

Sweater Season's Greetings by lovelatorri on

The cold weather has officially settled in here on the east coast which means that sweater season has descended upon us. Comfy over-sized sweaters have been trending this season but, that look isn't always flattering to every body type. Heavy knits can very easily add unwanted bulk to your look and with all the delicious meals we have during the holiday season  I'm sure that's something that you want to avoid. I've put together a lookbook comprised of different sweater types and styles to give you a few tips and ideas when your mixing and matching your cool weather wear. Enjoy!
